It’s well known that the Youtube button on your bookmark bar is a one way road to procrastination. Time evaporates as you click away the hours watching videos - forget any prospect of real work being done before lunch or home time.
Well, this lunch time, we at Dokoo have compiled an epic selection of Mr. Muhammed Ali’s finest one liners - we also abdicate responsibility for any lack of productivity that may result. Regardless, I’m sure you’ll agree it was time well spent. Remember to ‘like’ and ‘share’!
In no real order:
1. "Man! This is the wrong place to get tired."
In this snip from a brilliant interview with Parkinson, Ali talks about tiring out George Foreman in their 1974 rumble. As playful with his storytelling as he was in the ring with his opponents.
2. “The Recipe of Life”
A profound response to David Frost’s question about how Ali would like to be remembered. A recipe worth remembering perhaps.
3. “Clay comes out to meet Liston and Liston starts to retreat / If Liston goes back an inch farther he'll end up in a ringside seat.”
Still fighting under the name Cassius Clay, Ali put together this cheeky poem pre-fight to wind up Sonny Liston in 1963. The fight in 1964 was named the fourth greatest sports moment of the 20th century and, true to his word, Ali won.
4. “Ain’t he ugly? He's too ugly to be the world champ, the world champ should be pretty like me!”
In a distracted response to the original question being posed by the journalist, Ali spouts this brilliant one-liner at the very mention of Liston’s name. The 22-year old was just about to go face Liston for the first time.
5. "I done wrestled with an alligator, I done tussled with a whale…”
Our last clip is another hilarious Ali poem, this time at a press conference before his 1974 heavy weight world title match against George Foreman, who at the time was undefeated. It wasn’t long after this fight, I believe, that Mr Foreman started planning a career change into kitchenware.
